What Your Checkbook and Calendar Say About You

If I wanted to check your credit worthiness, I’d look at your balance sheet – what you have and what you owe – and I’d want to know about your history of paying your debts. If I wanted to know your values, I’d look at your calendar and checkbook.

How come? Well, the term “values” refers to core beliefs and convictions that drive decisions. Our values are revealed not by what we say but by what we do.

The simple fact is, time and money are limited resources that can materially affect the quality of our lives, so how we spend them reveals what’s really important to us.

We tend to think of our values in the grand context of our deepest moral convictions, but most of us have strong desires that have nothing to do with right and wrong. We value pleasure, comfort, companionship, adventure, and though we hate to admit it, certain possessions and luxuries.

There’s nothing wrong with having and pursuing these non-moral values so long as ethical values aren’t sacrificed in the process. Ultimately, though, it’s how we prioritize competing values that defines us.

Our character is determined by our dominant values.

So if you knew that your character would be judged by the choices reflected in your calendar and checkbook, would you spend either your time or money differently?

Are you spending enough time with your family, your team mates, and your own personal growth? Are you devoting enough time helping others, reflecting, learning, and growing?

Do you put your money where your mouth is? Do you give an adequate amount of your income to charity? Are you making the choice to help the causes you really believe in? Are you investing in your future and your growth?

The good news: it’s never too late to change your priorities! What are yours?

Here's our team of Volunteers

Last week we had 45 of our staff members unselfishly give up their Friday evening to make this black tie event at the Ritz in Marina del Rey such a large success. We were escorting people, running merchandise in and out of the ball room, selling the items, training people on the iPods – everything ran like a well-oiled machine. I love our team, and ultimately, the kids at The Club love us too. Over 4,000 kids will receive great after school programs & a remodeled learning annex because of successful events like this one. Great job to Team TAG & all our volunteers!

Two of our Leaders teamed up with the Venice Young Professionals Society last week in Venice to attend "Purely Social".

The mixer included a group of entrepreneurs and young professionals from industries including TV and film as well as fashion, sales and banking.
The attendees enjoyed drinks and hors d'oeuvres while mingling with other members and planning future events and fund raisers.
The event and society are designed to create an easy way to network with people in and outside your industry but in the same geographical area. The intent is to find the next representatives and leaders in the community.
There will be upcoming events with the society and they encourage members to join with the idea to build a social base in their local communities and be a part of future charitable events.

This is one of the many great ways to build your resume, gain exposure in the community & have a blast while surrounded by other people motivated by leadership!

One of our clients, QUILL, hosted a contest for the entire country. The top selling 3 reps in each region won $100-$400 in prizes... and for the WEST REGION, all 3 winning reps came from OUR OFFICE!!!

Once a year our Owners, Asst. managers, and Administrators get to break away for a rest and relaxation weekend get-a-way! This year our leadership teams took over a resort in beautiful Puerto Rico. They had a great time swimming in the clear blue waters, snorkeling, checking out the rain forest on the island, relaxing poolside, team building via dodge ball, and partying at themed dinners on the beach. One of the many perks of working hard to play hard with our organization!

Junior Staff of the Boys & Girls club of Venice welcomed Sachiko and Mani of Team TAG for a resume building workshop. Mani and Sachiko gave a presentation on why a resume is important, how to create a resume, and tips and tricks to make a resume stand out. We are proud of the girls for taking the time to help get the next generation set up for success.

Beach Run for Operation Smile

On April 9, 2011, Team TAG sponsored a Beach Run. We were supposed to run in the annual Irvine Lake Mud Run, but we had some logistical challenges. Thanks to our flexible runners, we managed to salvage our race – with some great additional twists.

We ran from Culver City to Play Del Rey. Team TAG donated $30 to Operation Smile for every runner – with 13 runners we donated $390. The finish line was the ocean along this 4.5 mile journey. The winning team got to enjoy front row seats at the beach while every team that followed would have to dunk in the ocean. ”The Old Guys” won the race while the young whipper snappers must have had the wrong songs downloaded to their iPods.

After the run, Jaime treated us all to a feast at The Shack in Playa Del Rey. It was a day when competition intersected with cooperation.

Team TAG Supports Japan (Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Crisis)

During the crisis in Japan, LEADER Sachiko Yamasaki stepped up and rallied the troops of Team TAG in organizing a fundraiser (Texas Hold 'Em Tournament) that raised over $500. All contributions were donated to the red cross of Japan.

Sachiko Yamasaki: “Being from Japan, the recent environmental disaster had a huge impact on me. The opportunity to give back to my country following the disaster was not only important to me, but personal. I experienced the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, which happened in my hometown. During that time resources were scarce; we lived with limited food, water and gas. My people and I were able to survive through the help of volunteers and many generous donations. Now, it’s my opportunity to give something back to my country and help as many people as possible survive through the disaster.”

We are very proud of Sachiko and her achievement in the success of her fundraiser! It's great to work with motivated individuals who are here to help make a positive difference in the world we live in. Sachiko is a great example and we're excited to watch her grow and continue doing great things!

Sachiko continues: “This event not only allowed me to help my country, but gave me the opportunity to hone my leadership skills. More specifically, I learned how to influence and encourage people to do something. If I did not commit to the event full force and did not truly believe that raising money for Japan would help, then why would anyone else follow me? Without committed followers it would not have been a successful event. Believing in what you do, with a goal and purpose in mind is definitely the key to success.

Every few months, Team TAG sends several key players to leadership conferences. On March 8, 2011, we had 30 people from our organization attend a world class event. Heather Corbin, Eric Denq, and Sachiko Yamasaki (from the Los Angeles branch) joined several colleagues from other offices at a Leadership Conference in San Diego, California. They observed keynote speakers such as Colin Powell, Joe Montana, Bill Cosby, Rudy Giuliani, Steve Forbes and Lou Holtz to name a few. Listening to these legendary American icons, Heather, Eric and Sachiko were inspired and motivated to bring the value of the conference home. They delivered gift baskets of skills to the office in the form of how to maintain a winning attitude, keys to success, and how to empower others. Awesome Leadership Conference! Great value added!

President of MVP Concepts Saves A Life & Is Honored by Sacramento Fire Department!

We are very proud to share a story of a true HERO in our organization! Our Sacramento CEO of MVP Concepts, Austin Smith witnessed a car accident last February and trusted his instincts to save a human life! During February’s award ceremony with the Sacramento Metro Fire Department, Smith was presented with an award from Fire Chief Bill Sponable and the Board of Directors. He was honored in the presence of 50 Sacramento citizens and the staff of the Metro Fire Department.

"Leadership is an action, not a title. It’s something you do, not something you talk about,” Austin Smith said. “Real leaders step up in the face of adversity, look it in the eye, and tell it that it has no change of stopping me from what needs to be done, no matter what the measures.”

So what happened exactly? When Austin got to the scene, he saw that the truck was in three feet of water and John, the injured driver, was in convulsions, & his foot was still on the gas. Austin asked him who was important to him; the driver gave him a name, and reached for the phone to dial that person, & told her what had happened. Smith then lifted his foot off the gas and that was digging him deeper into the water, took his keys out of the ignition, and threw them in the bed of the truck. “For 45 minutes, I kept him conscious and no one knew where I was because of the location of the truck,” Smith said. “I kept talking to him until CareFlight came and the firemen helped put him on the stretcher to pull him on the embankment.”

Team captain Eric Denq led his crew to victory over the last couple months for Office Olympics! He dominated dodge ball, minute-to-win it, basketball, and the intensity day in the field. How did Eric take the win? "It's all about CONSISTENCY with me, my team may not have won 1st in each category, but we kept a great attitude and gave each round of games our all! An average of high scores gave me the win." Well done Eric and team!

January 28th 2011, Team TAG member's came out to support their newest addition to the management team, Liz Jorgensen, at Defore Dance Center's scholarship showcase PULSE. Since the program's inception in the early 90's the Defore Dance Center scholarship program has been providing education and opportunity to budding dancers and choreographers all over southern California. As a previous scholarship student (2003) at Defore Dance Center, Liz has a particular soft spot for the program and all that it provides. "I came into the studio after having completely abandoned any hope that I had for dancing or teaching professionally, and was recruited into the scholarship program after a girlfriend of mine brought me with her to class one day. With the training and mentoring that the studio provided me, I was teaching at the studio within my first month, and assisting the artistic director in class and rehearsal shortly after. Every teaching job or performance gig that I had been offered in California, Chicago, New York and internationally came about because of the connections I had been able to make at Defore's during my time on scholarship. Every year they put on this showcase to highlight the scholarship students and help give them the same opportunities they gave me years ago in my dancing days. It makes me so happy to be a part of a company that supports its staff in every endeavor, whether personal or professional; especially since my career has taken me in a different direction than dancing. It's nice to give back and have people support my own philanthropic endeavors."

In addition to all she does at Team TAG, Liz currently is dancing for DULCE, a cabaret company that performs at dinner shows, night clubs, and various concert gigs throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. She is hoping that her work with DULCE will eventually lead her to provide outreach opportunities to young girls promoting a healthy body image and self esteem.

It was an awesome time celebrating the holiday with a Christmas party here at the office with the whole gang, just before we turned in for a long weekend to enjoy time with our families. Our Secret Santa was a blast as the team got creative with gift ideas, nothing like a thoughtful surprise from a teammate in your life :) We did a raffle drawing with some GREAT prizes, Rachel even won an IPAD!!! We enjoyed pizza, music, games, and each other, can't think of a better way to end the year!

On December 19, 2010, Team TAG hosted a Charity Dodgeball Tournament at the Boys & Girls Club.

We raised funds for 2 charities for Christmas: Operation Smile and the Boys & Girls Club of Venice.

14 teams competed, over $1500 was raised, and everyone had a great time.

Congratulations to Tedford and his team “World Domination” for winning the tournament.

Thank you to all who attended. Your money went to worthy causes! Keep up the great work!
